There is a lot of talk about Leadership, but what do we mean by leading? When is a person perceived as a leader? How can we implement a Leadership Development program in our organizations? Today we propose to answer these and other questions about one of the most important skills in times of uncertainty: Leadership and its link to team cohesion.
What is leadership?
Leadership is a fundamental skill for the success of any company and of anyone with some type of responsibility. Effective leaders are able to motivate and inspire their teams to achieve common goals. They are able to understand and align the motivations and strengths of the person and focus them towards shared goals.
In the case of middle managers, their role is especially important, as they are the people in charge of managing and developing the teams under their charge and transforming the long-term of an organization into a well-focused day-to-day life.
But these leadership skills are not something innate that you are born with or not. As with all competitions, these can be trained.
What is leadership development?
Leadership development is an ongoing process of learning and personal growth that helps people work on, expand, and refocus the skills and competencies needed to be effective leaders.
At Psicotec we differentiate between three competency axes that impact leadership development:
-
Personal competencies: those that refer to the individual and his or her own development.
-
Relational skills: those that focus on the way we relate to other people and the environment.
-
Leadership competencies: combines personal and relational competencies with purely business competencies to improve motivation, influence, and team management skills.
This classification should not be understood as exclusive. On the contrary, given the great diversity of leadership models that coexist, leadership development must be increasingly permeable to the environment, values, emotions and dynamics of the individual and the group.
This process can be carried out through different methods, such as training, coaching or mentoring, but always supported by an experiential methodology that allows people to be protagonists of the change process. Only in this way will in-depth and lasting learning be achieved.
How to Conduct a Leadership Development Program
To run an effective leadership development program, it’s important to take the following steps:
-
Analyze the needs of the company and middle management. The first thing to do is to identify the skills and competencies that middle managers need to develop in order to be more effective.
-
Design a custom development program. Once the needs have been identified, it is necessary to design a customized development program that addresses areas for improvement in middle management. The program should be flexible and tailored to each person’s individual needs.
-
Implement the development program. The program must be implemented effectively so that middle managers can make the most of its potential. To do this, it is important to have a team of qualified professionals to supervise the process and provide support to middle management. A guarantee of impartiality and rigor is to have an expert human resources consultant. From the Development & Training Area of Psicotec we designed and launched the Leadership Challenge Program: one of our most demanded and best valued development programs.
-
Evaluate the impact of the program. It is important to assess the impact of the program to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.
What to consider when implementing a leadership development program
When implementing a leadership development program, it is important to consider the following factors:
-
The support of senior management. The support of senior management is critical to the success of any leadership development program. Senior management must commit to the program and provide the necessary resources for its implementation.
-
The participation of middle management. Middle managers must be actively involved in the leadership development process. To do this, it is important that they feel motivated and involved in the program.
-
The flexibility and adaptability of the program. The program must be flexible and adaptable so that it can be adapted to the individual needs of middle management.
How to link leaders to their teams and the organization as a whole
Leadership development isn’t just a matter of improving the skills and competencies of middle managers. It is also important to link these leaders with their teams and the organization as a whole.
It will be of little use to have great leaders who are very prepared if the rest of the collaborators perceive them as something alien to them. That is why at Psicotec we always recommend that, when carrying out a leadership program or training, it is complemented with Teambuilding actions focused on teamwork, communication and trust.
Teambuilding is one of the most powerful tools to work on the work environment, commitment and internal communication. These dates, with Christmas and New Year’s Eve practically around the corner, are an unbeatable time to celebrate some Teambuilding or Outdoor that allows you to establish relationships between collaborators.
Dinners, parties, shows, kick offs, getaways, volunteering, escape rooms, collaborative cooking workshops, virtual reality and Artificial Intelligence sessions… Whatever format you have in mind, why not transform it into a high-impact and teambuilding activity?
A festive, playful environment outside the usual workspace allows you to break down the physical (and mental) barriers that can separate leaders from their teams and establish new communication flows based on trust and closeness.
Psicotec’s Development and Training Area will help you create the best event for these dates. And, in addition, if you still have FUNDAE Training Credit available, it can also help you manage it.
Do we work together on leadership development, the work environment and training and skills development?
