Our interlocutors have a very varied background, from Engineers, Economists, Computer Scientists, to graduates in Health Sciences… Depending on the training and the sector of reference, they have always given weight to different characteristics when it came to identifying and developing talent: specific training, a specific postgraduate degree, specific experience…

Over the years, the vision of people in companies has taken on different nuances and more and more people have been transferred to us the importance of “know-how” but also of “how to do”… Until today, where a large part of organizations position people at the center of companies, as a key element to contribute and grow in line with the corporate strategy. In short, the aim is to align the purpose of organizations and that of the people who make them up as a way to maximize performance and generate value.

This vision has evolved hand in hand with the weight that the People Area has been acquiring in organizations. In these years we have gone from an absence of the reference figure in HR to finding great professionals with a voice and great criteria. Professionals who, generally, have managed to imprint a sensitivity on the importance of “how to do”.

In this context, the hitherto misnamed “Soft Skills” appear, which have been renamed acquiring the strength and power they possess… we are talking about POWER SKILLS.

Power Skills empower the professional and are the key to success. Therefore, we must value them and also develop them, enhancing them and eliminating the traces of a time when these characteristics were considered secondary.

But what are Power Skills? They are the personal skills to perform a task or mission within an organization and that allow us to offer unique and differentiating results.

Just as in the business world people face different contexts, Power Skills can also be classified according to these. Thus, we can identify Power Skills in these areas:

Personal. We talk about the skills needed when faced with a task/relationship (analytical thinking, emotion management, problem solving, etc.)

Those referring to individual relationships (one to one) or team relationships (communication, social influence, collaboration, etc.)

Leadership/Entrepreneurship. Typical of project and/or people management activities (organization and planning, people development, strategic vision, etc.)

Present in all circumstances and tasks in our business reality (use of technology, control and management of applications, management of digital information, etc.).

The trust in Power Skills as a driver of change and a differentiating factor in people has led them to be considered outside the field of HR. At the last World Economic Forum, the 10 critical skills needed for a business organization in 2025 were highlighted. They are as follows:

According to the World Economic Forum, investing in upskilling and renewing initiatives could boost global GDP by as much as $6.5 billion and create 5.3 billion jobs by 2030.

In this context, is it worth investing in working on Power Skills? How can we do that?

The important and critical thing is to design a Plan, a Plan that integrates and contemplates Power Skills globally and in different areas:

Design a comprehensive upskilling agenda.

Implement an agile approach to drive upskilling initiatives.

In the field of business, incorporate training and development as an investment.

Reinventing education—adapting learning to real needs.

Delving deeper into the business field, there are several tips that must be taken into account when working with Power Skills:

They must be at the core of the business, in the strategy. They impact the entire employee life cycle: from onboarding to dismissal and in all related areas (labor, talent selection and identification, development and compensation).

They allow measurable results and can be developed. The design and execution of analysis and development programs must be in the hands of professionals.

Implement and promote internal and external communication policies. We will facilitate linking and alignment with the business purpose.

On Boarding. Work on the first impact. Welcoming is one of the key moments in a person’s life in our organization. Work on it also in promotions and career plans. Link it to upskilling and reskilling programs.

Vanessa Hernanz.-Director.
