As Ortega y Gasset said; “I am me and my circumstances”, so only some pioneers or visionaries are able to escape this fact.

In this way, in addition to the professional shock that occurs when a new worker joins the company, we are facing another somewhat more drastic shock, if possible. This is known as the generational clash.

We have all suffered both circumstances when facing our first days of work, even our first months. We will all remember when, fresh out of the faculty we went to with sneakers, half-empty backpack, comfortable clothes and on most days only a few hours (that is as long as the class counted towards the final grade or if the teacher gave classes with high doses of motivation), we had to “disguise” ourselves with a seriousness largely unknown until now, wearing a suit and tie or a dress and heel, to attend our first day of work in the company.

First impressions covered with formality, discipline, seriousness, hierarchy… “I have not studied this in my degree”. We are witnessing the first clash, the professional clash.

However, this is a fact that has been happening in every new professional who has started in the workplace and that, in all likelihood, will continue to occur as long as the University continues to keep its distance from the Companies. However, what concerns us here is another type of shock that we perceive and that, perhaps now more than ever, is topical.

It is, no more and no less, than the generational clash that occurs when a new person from a younger generation enters the labor market and has to adapt to the company, where other previous generations of workers are already found.

The arrival of Millennials and with them, to a large extent, the digitalization of the labor system, has caused the biggest generational clash in recent decades to arise. This is, in part, due to the way in which the different generations that make up the cast of workers today have had access to information.

Previous generations are used to effort and work being a guarantee of a good result, while the Ys (Millennials) understand that everything is just a click away, for which they only have to be agile with their words and ensure a good Google search. The internet is the most revolutionary tool, at the work level, in recent times.

In this way, the controversy arises. The new hires are committed to immediacy in the performance of tasks, as well as in their professional growth and recognition, while advocating the constant use of ICTs, while the workers already established in the company require effort, dedication and commitment to the new members and, likewise, are not so familiar with the latest technological developments.

We are facing the classic clash that has been taking place in companies since Millennials appeared on the playing field, a common pattern in most of them, and a topic that can be commented on in numerous business articles.

What can we do about it? Do we assume that this shock is a law of life and therefore recurrent over time? Wait for new professionals to adapt to the world of work? Forget ICTs or adapt to them little by little and thus slow down the growth of the company? To suddenly assume the new use of technologies brought to us by the new members and forget all the above?

A few weeks ago, the Director of Psicotec S.A., Mª Luisa Rioboó, and I attended a talk at the Rey Juan Carlos University for young people of the next generation of future workers, Generation Z, where we made them aware of this fact and asked them to give their vision as future members who will incur the clash in the coming years.

Other people from generations very different from this one also attended, such as EULEN’s Director of Innovation, Ricardo Gabarró. After the debate generated during the day, we were able to verify that the way of being or facing work, broadly speaking, does belong to the time we lived. However, the fact of acquiring knowledge and attending to the added value that other generations bring us enriches us as people while making us better professionally.

So, what is the company looking for? If what you are looking for is efficiency and progress, the fact that the work team is the most productive is to a large extent the goal you should pursue. Now, we must ask ourselves: Are we doing what is necessary to meet this objective?

In short, if the generations that are now arriving are the generations of the future, the idea is that they are trained in the business philosophy by the most senior people in the organization, while at the same time they can help them to learn about the new technological tools, so that everyone has a place in the company and it is reinforced and updated. But does the company do enough to carry out this integrative strategy? And we, as workers, are we willing to train and be trained by both older and younger people?

We have to think that we are not only different generations, but that each of us brings added value. This is vital to understand this bi-mentoring that helps to implement new strategies that enhance the achievement of the objective set by organizations. We are not talking about the future, it is already happening.

Patricia Sánchez, Junior Consultant at Psicotec and Millennial.

Impatient, changeable, creative, optimistic, technological, egocentric, prepared… These are just some of the adjectives we can hear when we talk about the latest generation to join the world of work: Generation Y or Millennials.
