A few days ago, reading an article in a Sunday magazine, it reminded me, even though this memory in one way or another continues to accompany me, that thirty years have passed since we met through the media Omaira, a little Colombian girl of only thirteen years old (I was twelve at the time) who was trapped up to her neck in the mud. water and remains of his own house after the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.<\/p>\n
I only saw her during the three days that her harrowing rescue attempt lasted, but that image remained forever engraved in my mind.<\/p>\n
Her attitude, Omaira’s, was then and continues to be today, an example of courage, empathy, generosity and commitment, both with the people who tried to help her and for those others who were left \u201calone\u201d after the tragedy.
\nAt that time I made him a promise that unfortunately I have not fulfilled. But today this will be my particular tribute to his paragon of virtues, seeing in his example reflections and actions to share with you. <\/p>\n
And it is about sharing, making us aware of the privileged situation that many of us have, although sometimes we prefer to complain. And from that privileged situation to be able to share and offer our support, to do our bit so that other people who for different circumstances are not as fortunate as us can feel better, even that it means progress for them, and that all this also reverts to ourselves.
\nThat is the essence of volunteering: sharing generously without expecting anything in return and, nevertheless, receiving much more than we had imagined: personal satisfaction, the ability to flex your own positions and prejudices, to add, to trust, to believe that it can be done… <\/p>\n
I also observe that more and more initiatives are emerging from companies to carry out this type of action, in which a very high percentage of their employees participate in a timely manner and, why not carry out these actions in a more sustained way over time? In short, why not look for beneficial synergies in triplicate?<\/p>\n
Let me explain, on the one hand, and I think it is fundamental, linking the development of professionals to this type of initiative means that we achieve a not inconsiderable number of volunteers with continuity over time; on the other, and no less important, the company shows an unwavering commitment to society and, of course, to its employees; Finally, people align themselves with a series of values that coincide with their own and their own expectations, achieving a very significant development of competencies, because each of them, through the experience of volunteering, face realities, in most cases, very different from their own. helping to be able to manage change by channeling the emotions that accompany it, identifying them and being able to lead them in a positive way to overcome the resistance of each one in a natural way, in which above all the desire to contribute and serve as a lever that generates a benefit for others prevails.<\/p>\n
The development of competencies is a process that requires careful and thoughtful strategic planning, seeking and establishing the expected objectives in line with the Core Business. And volunteering, in this sense, is not a substitute for development plans but a very appropriate way to bring professionals together with their organizations in a transparent way and increase engagement levels. <\/p>\n
